FAQ 常见问题

What does AcadeMe do specifically?

AcadeMe is bringing opportunities for education in the liberal arts and humanities to students in China. Located in Beijing, AcadeMe currently offers unique and enriching opportunities to students at Beijing's top high schools who wish to cultivate critical thinking skills suited for college-level academics and self-awareness before continuing their education at a US college or university. Our programs include the Homer Project, semester-long interdisciplinary coursework in the humanities, and the Core, which provides personalized and transparent college counseling. Through these programs, AcadeMe's Fellows bring their academic strengths and passion for teaching to the classroom while instilling in their students new and invaluable perspectives that go well beyond the classroom.

What differentiates AcadeMe from other educational companies in China?

The most defining characteristic of the AcadeMe culture is our commitment to the liberal arts and humanities, which is demonstrated both in our coursework and in the academic passion our students and Fellows share. In addition, unlike other companies in China’s booming education industry, which tend to portray the US college application process as a set of obstacles—i.e., standardized testing and essay writing—that must be overcome, AcadeMe believes the US college application season has the potential to be extremely enriching for a student. Through our personalized college counseling program, we embark on a journey of self-discovery with our students. By the end of their time at AcadeMe, students exude greater maturity and self-awareness.

What is AcadeMe’s philosophy regarding college counseling?

Unlike other companies in China’s booming education industry, which tend to portray the US college application process as a set of obstacles—i.e., standardized testing and essay writing—that must be overcome, AcadeMe believes the US college application season has the potential to be extremely enriching for a student. Rather than trying to “package” students as the accumulation of accomplishments and accolades, we embark on a journey of self-discovery with our students, helping them to capture their most genuine selves in their essays. By the end of their time at AcadeMe, students exude greater maturity and self-awareness.

Does AcadeMe “ghost write” student essays?

Absolutely not. AcadeMe prides itself in its ethical and completely transparent college counseling service. We are able to boast strong relationships with many universities, like the University of Chicago, Columbia University, and Johns Hopkins University because of our demonstrated transparency and commitment to genuineness.

How big is your team? What is your team’s dynamic like?

Currently, our team is relatively small. We have six members on our on-site team of full-time employees in Beijing as well as a handful of past employees who advise us from abroad as necessary. Given the size of our team, we are therefore a tight-knit community and collaborate on most of our projects. We plan to expand our team by a few members this year to accommodate to greater student numbers.

What do your Fellows do before and after the college application season?

Although Fellows are busiest during the fall application season, they serve many important roles during the spring and summer as well, the most important of which being teacher for the Homer Project. We also encourage Fellows to engage in their own projects during this time. For example, in past years, Fellows have organized a Book Club and initiated online marketing campaigns completely independent of their day-to-day responsibilities.

Why do Fellows only serve two-year terms?

We believe the AcadeMe Fellowship is an especially great opportunity for students who plan to work in academia in the future but who first want to gain some professional experience in teaching. Though it is possible to stay beyond the two years stipulated in their contracts, Fellows tend to apply to graduate schools or PhD programs after their two years at AcadeMe—and we entirely support this decision! To allow for a smooth transition from AcadeMe to their next steps in AcadeMe, we even provide fellows with the option of taking a three-month paid sabbatical and conducting their own research.

Must applicants have concrete experience in teaching?

Though of course preferred, professional experience in teaching is not required. Some of our most successful Fellows planned and taught their very first classes here at AcadeMe as part of the Homer Project. Applicants without concrete teaching experience should be passionate about their academic interests and willing to share their knowledge with others.

Must applicants have some knowledge of the Chinese language and culture?

Although knowledge of the Chinese language and culture would certainly be a plus, we only require that Fellows have a serious interest in the liberal arts and humanities as well as teaching, as these criteria form the foundation of our office culture.

Does AcadeMe provide foreign employees with Chinese visas?

Yes, AcadeMe will help you prepare all of the necessary documentation for a 10-year multiple-entry visa.

What benefits does AcadeMe provide to its employees?

We pay for all Fellows’ travel to China upon graduation and will help anyone in need of housing in Beijing find suitable accommodations upon their arrival. For foreign employees, AcadeMe will also provide a visa, medical insurance, and a roundtrip flight to and from their home country once a year.
